Water pipeline replacement works suspended

Work on a new water main replacement scheme in the UK has been suspended temporarily.
The scheme in Wiggington, by South Staffs Water, was due to see a total of 1,804 metres of water mains replaced as part of ongoing improvement works.
However, the work has been halted on the advice of the highways department due to a COVID-19 vaccination centre being set up nearby and there were concerns this could have resulted in severe traffic delays.
Teams have been working to clear the site, backfill excavations and carry out temporary reinstatements.
Work had started on January 5 and engineers were aiming to complete the works with as little disruption as possible.
Customers were warned that there could be water disruption supplies for short periods of time before the works stopped.
A spokesman said: “We are committed to investing in new water mains, reduce leakage by at least 15% and to ensure our customers continue to receive a reliable and high-quality water supply.”
