KSB dispatches world’s most powerful boiler feed pump to Chinese coal plant

KSB Group has dispatched a boiler feed pump with reportedly the largest drive rating in the world, to be used in a coal-fired power plant currently under construction in Huaibei, China.

The supercritical power station Pingshan II is using a new technology that is expected to reach an efficiency of almost 50% at a unit output of 1,350MW.

The developers designed the CHTD 11 boiler feed pump specifically for a maximum inlet temperature of 270°C and a maximum pressure of 520 bar; the pump set will be driven by two steam turbines.

When the pump enters operation, it will reach an efficiency in excess of 88%, which is a significant increase over previous models.

Two type-YNK booster pumps, which were also manufactured by KSB in Frankenthal in southwestern Germany, supply the boiler feed pump with the required inlet pressure. Base plates, couplings and gear units will be fitted to complete the pump sets at KSB’s site in Shanghai, China.

In addition to the pump package, KSB will also supply the valves for the piping of pumps and steam boilers. Commissioning of the power plant is expected in 2021.
