Egyptian fuel pipeline explodes twice in same week

An Egyptian fuel pipeline had a rough week when the pipe supplying the Upper Egypt region exploded two times in less than seven days.

The pipeline, running by the Cairo-Assiut western desert road near the city of Edwa, ruptured on both Wednesday and Sunday last week, according to Egypt Independent.

Security forces were sent in to block the area until maintenance crews arrived, but that did not stop locals from rushing to the scene to fill containers with the leaking fuel.

Preliminary investigations into the accident cited technical reasons behind the explosion – especially that heavy equipment was crossing through the area – ruling out any acts of deliberate destruction or vandalism.
