Babcock to supply reliquefaction equipment to four LNG carriers

The company says that the system is more efficient and reduces operating costs.

Babcock is going to use its ecoSMRT LNG reliquefaction equipment to four new LNG carriers. It says the product offers efficiency, cost and footprint savings. The resulting system on the carriers will operate with a greater reliquefaction capacity at reduced power consumption, according to the company.

Designed to limit power use and reduce maintenance requirements, ecoSMRT uses only one compressor to reduce operating costs. The company also says that the product lowers emissions, with the aim to meet and exceed environmental regulations within the industry.

In a statement, Neale Campbell, Babcock LGE Systems Director, said that the system offered more flexibility and is ‘set to be revolutionary within the industry’.

ecoSMRT is the product of a joint development project between Hyundai Heavy Industries and Babcock. Mr Nam, senior vice president of the basic design team at HHI said in a statement: “We are delighted to have made the first sale of ecoSMRT into the LNG carrier market. Its technology provides customers with through life savings, making it an important solution for LNG ship owners and we look forward to its significant market success.”

The carriers are being built at Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan and Samho shipyards in South Korea.
