Australian water distribution pipelines upgraded
A $2.4 million (€2 million) upgrade to one of Hobart’s major water distribution pipelines has started in Australia.
The project will replace a section of the Claremont Trunk water pipeline that runs along the Brooker Highway in Berriedale and provides water from the West Derwent System to the Tolosa Reservoirs.
Capital Delivery Office (CDO) delivery manager Chris Le Grange said the pipeline section is almost 60 years old and 370 metres in length.
Historically, the old pipeline has failed at various locations along its length, causing loss of water supply to customers.
“The renewal of this pipe, which is the primary source of water in the Glenorchy area, will increase the reliability of water supply and significantly reduce unplanned service interruptions,” Le Grange said.
“Constructed in 1962, the large 571 mm diameter MSCL (Mild Steel Cement Lined) pipe will be removed and replaced in 12 metres sections.”
TasWater is rolling out water main renewal works across the state, ensuring customers receive reliable essential services.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of September.
