ABB pushes industrial efficiency forward with expanded IE6 SynRM motor range
ABB has taken another decisive step in industrial decarbonisation with the expansion of its IE6 Hyper Efficiency synchronous reluctance (SynRM) motor range.

The magnet free technology—now available from 110 to 450 kW in frame sizes 280 and 315, and operating at speeds up to 3600 rpm — brings ultra high efficiency to a wider set of demanding applications.

The move follows ABB’s 2024 breakthrough as the first manufacturer to launch a magnet free IE6 SynRM motor for specialist uses.

By making IE6 its mainstream option, ABB is now outpacing the anticipated IE6 Hyper Efficiency standard and raising the bar for sustainable motor performance.

Stefan Floeck, president IEC LV Motors at ABB, said the timing could not be more critical. “The IEA’s World Energy Outlook 2025 reinforces energy efficiency as one of the fastest and most cost effective levers for industrial productivity and decarbonisation. In line with our Engineered to Outrun philosophy, the IE6 Hyper Efficiency SynRM motors are designed exactly for this moment. Customers can now access world leading efficiency across a wider power range, often achieving payback in just months while moving closer to their sustainability targets.”

Upgrading from IE5 to ABB’s IE6 SynRM delivers even greater long term gains. Over a typical 20 year service life, users can save €51,200 and cut 92,200 kg of CO₂ — the equivalent of 21.5 petrol cars driving for a year—achieving an ROI in around eight months.
