Protecting critical infrastructure

With growing digitalisation and networking of essential security systems, cybersecurity is becoming increasingly important, especially for operators of supply networks as part of critical infrastructures.
If protection is inadequate, deliberate manipulations can significantly endanger the security of the facility.
ONTRAS Gastransport introduced the approach of Enhanced Risk Assessment (ERA) by TÜV SÜD, which combines safety and cybersecurity in a comprehensive risk analysis.
A study on the state of cybersecurity in Germany revealed that the overall financial impact caused by cyberattacks more than doubled since 2019, increasing from around 103 to 223 billion euros1.
Nine out of 10 companies were affected, reporting a strong increase in extortion and system failures as driving factors.
Furthermore, 87 % of operators of energy supply networks and other critical infrastructures (KRITIS) reported an increase in cyberattacks. The EU Commission is addressing this alarming increase with the EU Cybersecurity Strategy, formally adopted in December 20202.
