United Utilities begins £12 million stormwater upgrade

news item image
United Utilities has commenced a £12 million (€13.8 million) project to construct a major underground stormwater tank at Duxbury Mill in Chorley, in the UK marking a significant investment in improving local water quality and strengthening the region’s drainage infrastructure.
The new tank, located on land adjacent to Myles Standish Way, will provide storage for up to three million litres of stormwater.
By capturing excess rainfall during severe weather, the facility will help reduce the frequency of storm overflows and support long term improvements to the River Yarrow.
This scheme forms part of a wider £30 million (€35 million) programme of work in Chorley, where five major projects are scheduled for delivery by 2030.
Together, these initiatives aim to enhance the health of local rivers, bolster the resilience of the water network, and ensure the community is better protected against the impacts of increasingly intense rainfall.
Across Lancashire, United Utilities is progressing more than 90 projects designed to reduce storm overflows, safeguard communities from flooding, and improve river water quality. The company’s investment reflects its commitment to modernising wastewater infrastructure and supporting a cleaner, more sustainable water environment for the region.
