Sarens plays strategic role in Saudi Arabia’s pioneering Jafurah gas field development

The Jafurah Gas Field Development, a project of critical importance to Saudi Arabia’s energy future, is set to transform the Kingdom’s domestic gas supply and liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity.
With construction of the first phase commencing in late 2022 and the second phase scheduled for late 2024, this ambitious initiative underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to meeting its growing energy demands and achieving the LNG export targets established by the Ministry of Energy.
The Jafurah project, comparable in scale to Qatar’s North Field and Russia’s Yamal LNG, stands out for its simultaneous multi-phase construction—an approach rarely seen in projects of this magnitude. This strategy is designed to optimise investments and infrastructure while expediting the development timeline.
Global heavy lifting and engineered transport leader Sarens has been instrumental in the project’s progress, contributing critical expertise in the transport and installation of 34 modules weighing a total of 18,535 tonnes and the handling of 108 heavy items with a combined weight of 12,283 tonnes.
Working closely with its client, Samsung Saudi Arabia, Sarens is supporting the construction of key infrastructure, including the gas processing facility, LNG fractionation plant, gas compression system, and an extensive 1,500-kilometre network of pipelines.
When completed, the development is expected to significantly boost Saudi Arabia’s gas production capacity.
According to Saudi Aramco and the Ministry of Energy, gas production is forecast to rise from 14 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) in 2025 to over 18 billion cubic feet per day by 2027, when the full infrastructure comes online. The first phase focuses on developing unconventional gas resources, while the second phase aims to expand large-scale production capabilities.
Sarens’ involvement highlights the company’s expertise in large-scale energy projects. The organisation has previously contributed to other landmark developments, such as Qatar’s North Field expansion.
“We are proud to play a strategic role in the Jafurah Gas Field Development, which represents a milestone for Saudi Arabia’s energy sector,” said a Sarens spokesperson.
