Nearly one in three workers at the Lindsey Oil Refinery in the UK will lose their jobs.
According to the Insolvency Service, 125 employees will be made redundant at the end of October, leaving 255 still employed at the North Killingholme site in North Lincolnshire.
The refinery has been under the control of the government’s official receiver since June, after its owner, Prax Group, entered administration.
The Unite union criticised the government, saying it was “responsible for allowing these redundancies to go ahead” and arguing that support could have been provided to keep the refinery operational.
An Insolvency Service spokesperson said the decision “was not taken lightly” and came after a full review of the business following its insolvency. The service also confirmed that affected workers would receive help through the Redundancy Payments Service.
The site remains safe, with the official receiver focusing on securing a buyer for the refinery.
“The conduct of the company and its directors, following the collapse of Prax Oil Refinery, is still under investigation,” the spokesperson added.
