Frames designs first industrial scale LOHC storage plant

Frames, in collaboration with Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies and MAN Energy Solutions, is designing a modular and skid-mounted liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) storage plant.
This will be the first industrial scale LOHC plant in Cologne, located at CHEMPARK Dormagen, Germany, and will have the capacity to store 5 tonnes of hydrogen per day.
Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies, Frames Group, MAN Energy Solutions formed a partnership for the design, supply and start-up of industrial scale hydrogen storage plants based on Hydrogenious’ LOHC technology in 2019. The plant’s reactor will be designed by MAN Energy Solutions.
In the LOHC storage plant, hydrogen is chemically bonded to the LOHC material benzyl toluene, a thermal oil.
This carrier oil can be transported under ambient conditions in conventional and existing logistics infrastructures comparable to the delivery of petroleum or diesel.
From the plant in the CHEMPARK Dormagen, the LOHC loaded with hydrogen will be loaded to a truck for road transport to LOHC release plants and hydrogen offtakers in Europe, among others in Rotterdam.
“Frames has a proven track record in implementing innovative systems for processing various gases, also within the field of novel hydrogen technologies,” said Stefan Naser, chief operating officer of Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies. “Their vast experience could be of great support to the roll-out of turnkey, stationary Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier plant infrastructure based on Hydrogenious’ proprietary technology.”
