Dura Pump saves hospital £750,000 per year with pumping system overhaul

A major NHS hospital in the Midlands has cut its annual operational costs by £750,000 after replacing its outdated sewage pumping system with a new high-efficiency setup designed and installed by pump specialists Dura Pump.


The hospital had long struggled with frequent blockages caused by fats, oils, greases, and debris - leading to costly downtime and reliance on tankers to remove waste.


The solution involved installing two 15kW Landia Chopper Pumps as part of Dura Pump’s Velocity Sentinam system. These powerful submersible pumps feature an external cutting mechanism that prevents solids from clogging the system by continuously reducing particle size before they enter the pump casing.


In addition to the hardware upgrade, Dura Pump installed an advanced twin control panel integrated with the hospital’s Building Management System. The panel, equipped with intelligent controls, inverters, and radar level detection, automatically adjusts pump output based on real-time flow data. This significantly reduces energy consumption while improving reliability.


The system also features automated skimming to remove surface debris throughout the day, reducing fat buildup and odours. A cloud-based monitoring and alert service, SenSync, notifies staff of any faults or performance issues instantly via text or email, allowing problems to be resolved before service is affected.

The new setup enables predictive maintenance by tracking long-term performance trends and integrating fully with the hospital's digital infrastructure, providing real-time data and alerts with minimal manual oversight.
