bp pulls out of new hydrogen plant plans in the UK

bp has withdrawn from plans to develop a hydrogen facility in Teesside after a dispute emerged over whether the site should instead be used for a data centre.
A government ruling on the future of the proposed plant at Teesworks in Redcar had been expected this week, but the company stepped back before any decision was issued, saying there had been a “material change in circumstances” affecting the land earmarked for the project.
The scheme, known as H2Teesside, had already become contentious after the landowners, South Tees Group (STG), applied for permission to repurpose the area for a data centre. Teesworks Ltd, part of STG, argued that the alternative development would better serve the local community.
bp said the data centre application contributed to the “material change” that influenced its withdrawal.
A company spokesperson added: “We are still progressing with several other initiatives on Teesside, including our backing for Net Zero Teesside Power and the Northern Endurance Partnership, and we remain committed to the region.”
