First steps taken towards Croatian LNG terminal in the Adriatic

At Sepen Bay, near the small coastal town of Omišalj, Croatia, the first steps have been taken towards the creation of an LNG terminal in the Adriatic Sea.

LNG Hrvatska has announced that it has employed Geokon-Zagreb to conduct investigation activities on the seabed over the period 16 August until 25 September. In a statement, the company explains that the investigation activities will be carried out by six Croatian vessels.

According to EURACTIV, citing Croatian media, these preliminary investigations will involve research and drilling of the sea bed off the island of Krk, to test its stability.

The Krk terminal is on the EU’s list of Projects of Common Interest, as it aims to diversify the uniion’s gas supply sources. EURACTIV states that the EU is set to give €101.4 million of funding to the terminal, equivalent to almost 30% of the project’s assessed value.

With completion planned for 2019, the terminal’s capacity is expected to be around 2 billion cubic metres of gas per year.
