Acciona Agua announced that it has been awarded the contract by Canal de Isabel II 9 May. Canal de Isabel II manages the water cycle in Madrid and owns Grupo Canal de Isabel II, a company that provides water to over nine million people across Spain and Latin America.

The contract came into effect on 19 April 2018 and will last for four years; it represents revenues of €24 million. Acciona will manage the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plants of Grupo Cuenca Guadarrama, a division of Canal de Isabel II.

Acciona will provide water to a population equivalent to two million people, with a maximum overall treatment capacity of 1.75m3/s and a treated flow of more than 30.5 million cubic metres annually.

Facilities at the plants include biological treatment processes for the elimination of nutrients and tertiary treatments, with plans for power cogeneration via microturbines. The new plant at Arroyo Valenoso has ultrafiltration technology with membrane bioreactors, which allows the separation of sludge through the filtering process, removing the need for traditional secondary settling.

The plant at La Reguera is to be equipped with a biogas enrichment process that works through the anaerobic digestion of sludge. The product of this process is later used as biofuel for self-consumption or injection into the natural gas network.

Acciona says that the cogeneration and biogas enrichment processes will produce around 5,000 megawatt-hours of electricity a year, enough to supply around 4,000 people.

Several of the plants also have tertiary treatment, in which water goes through different stages using sand and mesh filters, UV light equipment and disinfection with sodium hypochlorite.

Acciona provides sustainable solutions for infrastructure and renewable energy projects. Employing over 37,000 people, the company earned net profits of €220 million in 2017.
