May 1, ABB announced that it will provide integrated ABB Ability automation and safety systems to Statoil’s new Johan Castberg oil field development project in Norway. The company said that its solutions and services will help reduce the capital expenditure for the project.

ABB works in electrification, robotics and motion, industrial automation and power grids. It supplies customers in utilities, industry, transport and infrastructure around the world.

Located in the Barents Sea, north of the Arctic Circle, the new field will be developed with a floating production, storage and offloading production vessel (FPSO) and subsea installation with thirty wells. The new field has volumes estimated between 400 and 600 million barrels of oil.

ABB will provide integrated ABB Ability System 800xA automation and safety systems, including advanced simulation and related services designed to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of the offshore FPSO. The order is valued at approximately $25 million (€20.8 million).

Working with design contractor Aker Solutions, ABB also will provide engineering, installation and commissioning for the project.

“Digitalisation and advanced safety and automation systems are key to safer, more efficient, more reliable and more environmentally friendly operation of oil, gas, and chemical facilities,” said Per Erik Holsten, managing director at ABB Oil, Gas, and Chemicals.

The field is scheduled to begin operation in 2022 and will have an estimated production lifespan of thirty years. ABB’s deliveries will start in late 2018.

ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 136,000 employees. In 2017 it earned over $2.2 billion (over €1.8 billion) in net income.
