KSB announces internet-of-things system for pumps

The product enables remote monitoring of centrifugal pumps in operation at sites across the globe.

The system, called KSB Guard, uses networked vibration and temperature sensors directly fitted to pumps to increase process transparency. Changes in machine operating behaviour are detected at an early stage with KSB Guard, without having to be on site. Operators are updated with process data hourly as default, but can request information from the system at any time.

According to KSB: “The aim of the newly developed solution was to create a cost-effective interface to the Internet of Things for the vast number of pumps in operation worldwide.”

Information provided by the product includes the current status and recorded trends of all networked pumps, as well as relevant manuals and exploded views of pumps to allow easy maintenance. Customer-programmed alerts can be configured to notify the operator if a pump exceeds certain vibration velocities or temperatures.

Sensor units are attached to the bearing brackets or drive lantern of the pump using a magnet and adhesive. Battery power is used to provide a self-sufficient power supply and installation does not require the machine to be shut down.

The company says that, unlike previous products, this system suits being implemented retroactively. The sensors are designed for KSB centrifugal pumps and ‘corresponding competitor pumps’.
