The company says that the flowmeters reduce process down time and prevent false alarms.
According to a company press release, a third party has rated its Rosemount 8800 Vortex Flow Meters at safety integrity level (SIL) 2 and the Dual Vortex model at SIL 3. SIL numbers correspond to how likely a product is to fail, the higher the SIL number, the less likely it is to fail.
Redundancies for the Dual Vortex model include dual shredder bars (optional), dual sensing elements and dual transmitters. The meter also uses 1oo2 voting, which allows for one level of redundancy. The quad vortex uses a dual shredder bar, four sensors and four transmitters to remove the need for multiple flowmeters and uses 2oo3 voting, this also allows for one critical fault.
These products are designed with removable sensors, which the company says is meant to reduce down time, and a ‘critical process valve for aggressive applications’ to reduce an operator’s exposure to hazardous liquids.
“The new addition of SIL 2/3 certification allows Emerson to offer the most comprehensive Vortex portfolio to address the importance of plant safety, process availability, and measurement stability,” said Wally Baker, director of product marketing for Rosemount vortex flow meters.
The SIL is administered by the International Electrochemical Commission to assess process systems, especially ones critical to facility safety. The commission states that the relevant product must meet the safety criteria at a hardware and system-wide level.
