Positive test results for clean room couplings

US-based KTR has revealed successful results after testing several series of couplings for clean room applications.

It worked with the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology and Automation (IPA) to prove and certified its Radex-NC, Toolflex and the Rotex GS series couplings release few particles, making them viable for clean room technology.

Clean room technology refers to a processing environment containing as few particles as possible such as semiconductor production, pharmaceutical agents, optical lenses, laser technology or microsystems technology.

The three coupling brands were subjected to emission measurements to determine their suitability for use in clean rooms and classification into one of the clean room classes. Since there are less surfaces moving towards each other, less wear arises on zero-backlash couplings than on drive systems with backlash making them ideal for clean room applications. As a result, all couplings tested reached purity class 7 or 8 according to ISO 14644-1.
