Surge expected in positive displacement pumps market

The global positive displacement pumps market is expected to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 8% between 2017 and 2021, according to new market analysis from Technavio.

Positive displacement pumps are used in a variety of fluid handling applications. They move liquids and gases by trapping a fixed amount and then displacing that trapped volume into a discharge pipe. The vast majority of pumps used in fluid handling applications fall into either the positive displacement pump or centrifugal pump category. Some examples of positive displacement pumps include screw, peristaltic, rotary lobe and piston pumps.

A key advantage of positive displacement pumps is that they’re ‘constant flow machines’, meaning they deliver the same flow at a given speed (RPM) whatever the discharge pressure is. They are a particularly popular choice for applications which involve variable pressure conditions, and for handling heavy duty or ‘difficult’ fluids, such as those containing solids.

Asia-Pacific stimulating positive demand

According to Technavio’s study, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region will be a key driver of the global market growth. The APAC region will be the only one that experiences a faster APAC growth than that of the global positive displacement pumps market in the 2017-2021 period.

The APAC chemical, power generation, and food and beverage industries will be behind the greater need for positive displacement pumps.

In particular, the region’s growing chemical industry is expected to drive the positive displacement pumps market, thanks to the pumps’ ability to handle abrasive fluids, and those with solid particulates.

“The long life-cycle of positive displacement pumps is a factor that is expected to drive their adoption in the power generation units during the forecast period,” said Sushmit Chakraborty, a lead analyst at Technavio for automation research.

“China, Japan, and India are the top three countries that will account for a major share of the positive displacement pumps market in APAC in the year 2021.”

The full report, which segments the global positive displacement pumps market into three regions, and into two product categories – reciprocating and rotary pumps - is available from Technavio here.
