Innovative LNG tanks boast 60 day holding time

Finnish start-up LNGTainer is set to begin production of a new type of LNG container, with the intention of “opening up access to parts of the world where natural resources are scarce.”

LNGTainer will produce its new product in Finland. According to a statement, the company’s patented technology makes the storage and transportation of LNG more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than currently possible.

“The most revolutionary aspect of the new tank container, and what gives a basis for the advanced design, is the fact that the insulation has been moved from the outside of the cryogenic tanks to the inside,” said Tom Sommardal, LNGTainer CEO.

Because LNG allows natural gas to be exported to areas with limited access to natural resources, LNGTainer hopes its new containers can help raise standards of living in these areas and prevent deforestation by providing an alternative heat source. The company’s technology gives their gas tanks a 60-day holding time, which allows them to be transported to parts of the world that are traditionally difficult to access.

“The containers are designed as 40' ISO containers stackable as per international rules and regulations, and can be flexibly arranged for storage purposes at power plants when used for feeding gas turbines or engines,” Sommardal continued.

LNGTainers new gas containers have 15% more volume and utilise 30% less equipment by weight compared to normal gas shipping containers. The containers also use less insulation to maintain internal temperature and need less energy to prepare the liquid gas for use.

“Production facilities have been developed, and the manufacturing capabilities are ready,” Sommardal continued. “The manufacturing process has been certified in accordance with ISO 9001 standard.”

LNGTainer has secured €3 million in funding for the project, from sources including private investors such as Nordic venture fund Innovestor and Tekes, a Finnish funding agency for innovation.
