Xylem secures $4.8 million UV drinking water disinfection contracts

Water specialist Xylem has secured contracts worth $4.8 million for its UV disinfection technology.

The UV treatment technologies will be supplied to two major drinking water plants in the City of Columbus, Ohio. Xylem’s solutions will provide an additional treatment barrier for Cryptosporidium at the Dublin Road Water Plant (a 80MGD plant) and the Hap Cremean Water Plant (a 125 MGD plant).

A chlorine resistant parasite, Cryptosporidium can be spread by swallowing contaminated water, causing serious illness with potentially severe symptoms. The parasite can be easily inactivated with a low UV dose.

Complex challenges

Neither upgrade was simple, both plants presenting unique engineering challenges.

The Hap Cremean plant required a complex retrofit into its existing filter pipe gallery. This necessitated the use of a compact UV reactor which allowed for maintenance activities while also requiring very few modifications to the existing piping arrangement. In addition, the UV system needed to achieve the required disinfection standard while maintaining less than 20 inches of head loss, so that the hydraulic profile would not be disrupted. For this, Xylem supplied 24 Spekton 2000e UV reactors.

It was also necessary for the UV disinfection system at the Dublin Road Water plant to minimise head loss, to avoid additional pumping costs and maximise clearwell volume. Xylem therefore provided five Wedeco K134 UV reactors that enabled the City of Columbus to avoid any unnecessary costs.

“The UV facilities will provide an additional treatment barrier at the Dublin Road Water Plant and Hap Cremean Water Plant, enhancing our disinfection capabilities and allowing us to continue to provide safe, reliable, and affordable drinking water for all our customers,” said C.R. Weaver, the City of Columbus Division of Water Project Manager.

Greg Claffey, director of Treatment Sales, North America, said: “At Xylem, we do not simply provide ‘one size fits all’ solutions; we work closely with our customers to create smart, sustainable solutions to their unique, complex water challenges. Our proven Wedeco UV technology was selected because it delivered the lowest life-cycle cost, primarily due to the energy efficiency of its low-pressure high-output (LPHO) Wedeco Ecoray lamps and the relative low head loss of the UV reactors. Furthermore, we were able to overcome the challenging requirements associated with the Hap Cremean plant retrofit.”
