Watson-Marlow positive displacement pump achieves rare aseptic certification

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group’s (WMFTG) MasoSine Certa pump has become only the second pump on the market to achieve EHEDG Type EL Class I Aseptic certification, meaning it meets the demands for aseptic applications specified by the certificate.

For users of the Certa pump, benefits of the certification include the fact the pump is self-draining, has a reduced CIP cycle time and requires lower volumes of cleaning agents.

WMFTG has also added four new models to the Certa range, covering flow rates as high as up to 99,000 litres per hour and as low as 100 l/h.

The company opted to pursue aseptic certification in response to strong customer demand for a pump suitable for aseptic packaging. It is reported that the aseptic packaging market is worth $28 million in the food, dairy and beverage industries.

A growing demand for additive free food has seen more food companies wanting to manufacture food under aseptic conditions in the quest for extended shelf-life. The new certification means that engineers can safely use Certa as part of an aseptic filling line.

According to a statement from WMFTG, the pump also delivers a “high suction capability” for handling viscous fluids and a sinusoidal rotor to gently carry fluid through the pump, reducing shear and product damage. WMFTG also claims that the sinusoidal rotor reduces power consumption compared to rotary lobe and circumferential piston pumps by up to 50% for high viscosity fluids.
