Xylem unveils new range of ‘self-cleaning pumps’

American company Xylem has launched a ‘newly enhanced’ compact pump range designed to efficiently pump wastewater in commercial buildings and municipal sewage applications. The water technology specialist has also announced the launch of the Flygt 3069, another new wastewater pump. Both feature Xylem’s Adaptive N technology, which allows “continuous, clog-free pumping of the toughest wastewater media.”

How Adaptive N avoids clogging by ‘cleaning itself’

Solid objects such as stringy fibrous material and modern waste enter the inlet of a conventional pump, often getting caught on the leading edges of the impeller vanes. This reduces the impeller’s efficiency, resulting in more unplanned callouts and increased energy consumption.

Adaptive N works in two stages. In general, solid objects entering the pump pass between impeller vanes. When an object gets caught on the leading edge of one of the vanes, it will slide along the backswept shape towards the perimeter of the inlet.

In the second stage, the solid object will slide along the tip of the impeller vane inside the relief groove. The guide pin in the insert ring pushes all types of solids away from the centre of the impeller, along the leading edge and out through the relief groove. If the debris is bulky, the Adaptive N impeller moves axially upward when required, allowing it to pass through smoothly.

 

According to Xylem, its Adaptive N technology boosts reliability through its self-cleaning ability, and lowers energy consumption by 25% compared to conventional pumps.

The new Flygt 3069 is a unique pump in its class, providing Xylem’s renowned clog-free technology in a small pump option with a capacity below 10 kilowatts (kW).”

The new hydraulic design of the enhanced compact wastewater pump range is available from Xylem in three different materials – hard-iron, grey iron and stainless steel. The Flygt 3069 meanwhile, is available with vortex and grinder hydraulic options. Coming with a modular design for adaptability, it can be installed in four different ways.
