EIA publishes crude oil and natural gas production figures

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) has published its monthly crude oil and natural gas production figures for March 2017.

Based on crude oil production data from state government agencies and the US Department of the Interior; Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement; the Domestic Crude Oil First Report; and first purchase data reported on the EIA-182 form, the figures for crude oil production rank each of the 50 US states, as well as offshore production in the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Texas was the largest oil producer, making an average 3.3 million barrels a day in March. The Federal Offshore Gulf of Mexico produced 1.7 million barrels per day, and North Dakota just over a million barrels a day.

Arizona and West Virginia both registered 0 on the EIA’s figures – meaning they both produce less than 0.5 thousand barrels a day. Compared with February 2016, the biggest increase came in Kentucky, whose production increased by 92% in March. The biggest decrease in production came in Arizona, its average daily production falling by 16.7%.

As with oil, Texas was also the biggest producer of natural gas in March 2017, at over 21 million cubic feet a day. Pennsylvania was the next highest producer, at just under 15 million ft3 a day, followed by Alaska at 9.9 million ft3. Montana was the lowest producer at 131,000 ft3 a day. The biggest month on month increase in production was in Louisiana, whose production went up by 3.7%. The biggest decrease was in Arkansas, where production fell by 6.4%.

The figures on natural gas production were obtained from the EIA’s 914 survey, as well as a host of energy sector reports.
