250,000 tonne pipe deal for Trans Mountain expansion

Trans Mountain has announced a supply deal with Canadian steelmaker EVRAZ North America.

In November 2016 the Canadian government granted approval for the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline, deciding the estimated $7.4 billion (€6.7 billion) project was in the interests of Canada and its population

The 1,150km pipeline was originally built in 1953. The expansion project will see the creation of a twinned pipeline between Strathcona County (near Edmonton), Alberta, and Burnaby, British Columbia. When completed, the expansion will improve the nominal capacity of the system from 300,000 barrels of oil per day to 890,000 barrels a day.

EVRAZ will supply the Trans Mountain expansion project with around 250,000 metric tonnes of pipe, equivalent to approximately 800 km of pipeline construction. The company claims that the deal will ensure that 75% of the pipe used in the construction project is produced in Canada.

The material for the pipe will be sourced from EVRAZ’s recycled metal operations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario and the pipe will be manufactured by Canadian members of the United Steelworkers Union.

“It has been our commitment from day one to deliver benefits from this Project to Canadians, and we are pleased to announce the single largest potential procurement contract to a Canadian plant and Canadian workers,” said Ian Anderson, President of Kinder Morgan Canada – the operators of the Trans Mountain pipeline.

EVRAZ North America is the only producer of 100% made in Canada pipe. “We look forward to working with Kinder Morgan on this Project. Our collective expertise will make this one of the most technically advanced and environmentally safe pipelines in the world,” said Conrad Winkler, EVRAZ North America President and CEO.
