Blackmer launches S Series Screw Pumps, ideal for bitumen

Blackmer, part of PSG, a Dover company, has announced its latest addition to the pumps market. The company’s new S Series Screw Pumps are specifically designed for transferring highly viscous liquids, and are ideal for moving bitumen from tankers to distant tank-farm facilities.

Liquid bitumen is a constant challenge in the fluid handling industry. Most commonly used as a cement binder for hot slab paving, it needs to be handled at extremely high temperatures in order to keep it at a useable viscosity. Even at these high temperatures however, liquid bitumen’s extreme viscosity and shear sensitivity mean it remains a challenge, especially in marine applications.

Blackmer designed the S Series Screw Pumps with the performance characteristics required for transferring highly viscous liquids in marine environments. According to a press release from the company: “S Series pumps feature a compact design composed of two sets of opposed screws that engage during operation to form a sealed cavity with the surrounding pump casing. The pumped liquid is moved axially as the screw shafts turn, allowing the liquid to be steadily and constantly conveyed to the center of the pump where the discharge port is located. This method of operation guarantees that the liquids are transferred with high efficiency and nearly pulsation-free, which are crucial considerations when transferring highly viscous liquids over great distances.”

Other features of Blackmer S Series Screw Pumps:

  • Compact design
  • Ability to run dry for short periods
  • High suction lift and constant flow rates in varying conditions
  • Available in a ‘With Timing Gear’ (WTG) configuration with a double-suction design that has no metal contact between the hydraulic components and automatic axial balancing
  • Low noise and almost pulsation free
  • Suitable for corrosive and non-corrosive, low or high viscosity, and clean or abrasive liquids
