New C$53.5m water treatment plant planned in West Kelowna

Canadian city of West Kelowna is planning to construct a new C$53.5 million (€37.5m) water treatment plant to supply half of the city’s population of 31,000.

Officials of the British Columbian city have submitted an application for provincial and federal governments to cover 83% of the costs through the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund.

The plant, on which construction work is planned to start in 2022, would remove the need for water quality advisories that can last for months on end.

One such advisory was carried out earlier this year after an algae bloom was detected in the Rose Valley reservoir north of the city.

The project would also connect the Lakeview, Pritchard, Sunnyside, and West Kelowna water systems.

A decision on which applications receive funding from Victoria and Ottawa is expected next spring.
